Karen's Clay Ocarinas
The OCARINA, oc·a·ri·naˌ äkəˈrēnə/:
A small egg-shaped wind instrument with
a mouthpiece and holes for the fingers,
in the category of vessels: FLUTES
My Ocarina designs are sculptures first and foremost, then I give them a voice. Most of my ocarina creations have 6 holes/Notes. A few have 4 holes/Notes, while a couple are one hole/Note whistles. The Ocarina Sculptures are between 5 inches - 8 inches so they may fit comfortably in your hands.
The present designs are prototypes that people can choose from. I then create an individual sculpture for each person, based on which ocarina design they choose or I’ll create a customized design. Each ocarina purchased has a little story or a tale to be told. Each ocarina will have their own blog page so owners can upload photos and continue to share the stories of their ocarina, as they travel the world together. These singing beings are meant to go with you. They are individually created by me for you. Feel free to share your adventures with your ocarina on our Blog Page. MyMuddyPawsStudio.com
MY INSPIRATION: As an installation artist, my sculptures are normally quite large. I've been repeatedly asked to create smaller sculptures, like the Fox Teapot. After researching many of ideas, I came across a very interesting ancient Pre-Columbian ocarina, “Ocarina with Standing Zoomorphic Figure with Crescent Headdress” – dated between 1000 and 1550. Intrigued with this historical reference while inspired by the stylized figure, I continued my research. Once I made up my mind that this was what I wanted to do, I had to learn how to make ocarinas! I watched countless YouTube videos and poured over stacks of books. As is typical, I finally just had to get my hands into the clay then process my own personal way to create these little creatures with voices. They are first and foremost sculptures that are given voices. I've kept them contemporary; a little funky and always, with sense of humor.
