Creating art is more about translating an idea from something ordinary into a visual form beyond the literal, classical interpretation. The theme of Nature lives in all my work nurtured by the memories of the Appalachian Mountains and the rich, fertile valleys of my childhood experiences. I am forever mindful that art is the lost and found of our past and present, Nature and Culture, what is and what may be. From my thoughts a lump of clay is carefully manipulated and finally a thing of beauty emerges. All tension and uncertainty are relieved as my very personal vision is revealed to share with others.
Photography is my inspiration. Viewing my world through the camera lens provides a different perspective, as if viewing something commonplace, but suddenly seeing for the first time, seeing it as art.
Painting: I do not draw or sculpt manmade objects such as skyscrapers or automobiles. Rather I take what I observe out of its photographic (real) representation and push it further into an abstracted realm. In all my work, photography, painting, sculpting and writing, the goal is that the viewer sees something that's familiar through new eyes.
Sculpture & Art Installations:
My sculptural figures created in clay and mixed media, explore the power of iconic images, sometimes on a more serious note. There is so much we don’t and can’t understand. I believe if we view an image from an unexpected perspective we’re have the opportunity to reconsider our relationship and perception of that image and to reevaluate its significance within our lives.
